Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Second Hand Motorbike

The idea of going for second hand commodities may not be the most attractive thing to do. However, for people who look for saving money, getting approved items, and reducing waste, second hand purchases are the fittest option.

In matters of clothing and other day-to-day items, it may not be necessary to have a list of things to consider. However, it is very crucial to make sure that a long list of pre-requisites is considered before making a purchase for motorbikes. Here are a few very important ones:

1. Research extensively

It is necessary to research the model of the bike you are going to buy. Collect information about pros and cons of the model. Look for reviews from people who are already using the same vehicle. Compare if it meets your requirements and the reasons why you looked for the new bike over your previous one.

2. Inspect the bike and plan a test ride

Before confirming your purchase it is important to talk to the owner or the seller about the flaws of the bike like:

  • Oil Leakage: Check for oil spillages around the engine. If the bike has been recently washed, the portion with leakage will appear shiny than the surrounding area.
  • Tyres: The tyres should have good thread all across the surface. The tyres with signs of wear and tear should be replaced.
  • Corrosion: The damage from corrosion is easily traceable. Surface rust is not a cause of concern but deep rust flakes could point towards improper maintenance. Tip: If the oil spill near the engine is brown, it indicates rusty insides.
  • Electricals and Battery: Check all the lights and switches and make sure they are in working condition.
  • Brakes: Check for smooth working of brakes, the pulsing.
  • Fuel Tank: Check for rust in the fuel tank.

Other important things like- Exhaust pipe, wheels, clutch, suspension, chains, etc. should be checked for good working conditions. If any of these are malfunctioning, make sure it is replaced with the new one by the seller themselves. Also, schedule a test drive so you are sure about your comfort and needs for the bike.

3. Check the VIN

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique number for every bike, consisting of letters and numbers. It is used for identifying the bike. If you are sure about buying the selected bike, check for the VIN or chassis number. With this number, check the history of the bike with the bike insurance company, state authorities and manufacturer by providing them with the VIN.

These things are most crucial that must be acknowledged before you choose to buy second hand motorcycle (รับซื้อรถมอเตอร์ไซค์ถึงบ้าน, term in Thai). In case of any malfunction, make a deal with the seller about replacement or keep an alternative with you.

Purchasing a second hand bike can have a few advantages rather than buying a new one. Getting your favorite bike and accessories for almost half a price. The older the vehicle, the lesser the cost of insurance. It also provides you the sense of being a responsible citizen as you contribute towards waste reduction and reduction in pollution, paving a way towards a sustainable way of living. Hoping that the task has been made a little easy for you.
